”Namaste” pronounced as “Namastay”- The ancient Hindu Greeting which means “I bow to the God within you”.
How much more beautiful can a greeting get than a simple “Namaste”? This humble greeting signifies the belief in the notion that there’s a God within all of us. The gesture of 2 hands folded as how you’d pray gives that respect to the notion.
Few days back, a dear friend was discussing about how he greets his elders and he mentioned to me that he says “Namaste Aunty” when he greets a friend’s mom for instance. When I heard that, at first I burst out laughing because we converse in English ALL the time and given the vivid imagination I’ve got I just imagined him greeting my mom with a “Namaste Aunty” and must I say that I found it totally sweet! Because we Indians believe that with the good wishes and blessings of our elders, we progress further in life. Wouldn’t a “Namaste” be the perfect greeting?
Hinduism has always fascinated the world around. And why not? A religion so rich in its traditions and values would be intriguing, where every gesture and tradition has a deep spiritual meaning to it.
